The UK government delivers some of the most complex and ambitious projects in the world, from transforming public services to strengthening national infrastructure and developing new capabilities across sectors such as health, energy, and defence. Effective and consistent planning is essential to ensure these achieve their intended impact. The Teal Book sets out the standards for how this should be done and provides a shared foundation that all civil servants should understand. 

This digital course provides non-project specialists with an introduction to the basic principles of best practice project planning. By working through the five stages outlined in The Teal Book (feasibility; appraise; define; deliver; and operate, embed and close), it aims to dispel the myth that project planning is simply about creating a schedule. 

Having completed this course, you’ll be able to determine the essential parts of a project, identify the areas that require planning and understand what steps are required to create a successful project plan. With these new skills, you will be better prepared to manage the end-to-end lifecycle of a project. 

This is a part of a suite of five courses, designed to provide non-specialists with an introduction to the fundamentals of successful project management. The courses include Project Planning, Managing Project Risk, Outcomes and Benefits, Project Scope and Change Control, and Stakeholder Engagement.
