Government Analysis Function

The Government Analysis Function is a diverse community made up of thousands of analysts across government who deliver the evidence and insights that matter for decision-makers and the public. It brings together a broad range of expertise and talent across the Analysis Function and encompasses all people or teams that produce analysis, evidence, and research, including multi-disciplinary analysts and members of analytical professions. These are:

Government Actuary’s Department (GAD)
Government Economic Service (GES)
Government Geography Profession
Government Operational Research Service (GORS)
Government Social Research (GSR)
Government Statistical Service (GSS); and
• Analytical Data Scientists within the Government Digital and Data Profession

One of the function’s key strategic objectives is ‘ensuring we have skilled people in the right place at the right time.’ People are central to the future direction of the function and having learning available to develop and maintain these skills is key. We are also committed to the development of analytical skills for non-analysts across the Civil Service, generally looking to increase analytical literacy in government.

Take a look at some introductory learning modules below that introduce some common themes within analysis, and a range of specialist analytical software to support your development. Visit the Government Analysis Function website, or send an email to find out more about the function.

The current Learning Frameworks contract is ending on 30 April 2026. This change will impact when you can book learning linked to our Professions pages. To support you with this transition, any courses impacted by the change will display a notice.

The final date for bookings is 30 April 2026, with learning required to start by 31 July 2026 and finish by 31 January 2027. After this deadline, new bookings will resume after the new contract starts.

These changes are happening across a series of waves and more information can be found here. The products in Wave 1 will not be available to book from 30 June 2025, and products in Wave 2 will not be available to book from 1 November 2025. The products in Wave 3 will need to start by 30 April 2026 and therefore we recommend bookings are made six weeks before this, by 19 March 2026.
