Management Programmes
"It’s vital we continue to invest in our training and development to equip our people with the skills, knowledge and networks they need to stay ahead.”
Declaration on Government Reform, published by the Prime Minister and Cabinet Secretary, June 2021
Depending on where you work within the Civil Service, your specific managerial responsibilities may vary. However, the knowledge, skills and networks you need will be the same, whatever your role. You’re expected to provide direction, guidance, goals and feedback. To help you achieve this – and to further develop management capability across the Civil Service – we have designed the Management programmes. Through collaboration and consulting with government organisations, these programmes align with the new educational standards around management capability. They include new content to match the change in ways of working, with an enhanced online learning platform and an interactive workbook that promotes social learning.
All three management programmes are now available to book.
Foundation Programme
The Foundation programme helps new managers, of any grade, to develop the essential leadership and management skills that they require as they embark on their managerial career. Previously, the New Manager Programme was the go-to learning for first time managers. The Management: Foundation Programme has been developed in line with the new educational standards as part of the focus on training, and is the Leadership College's recommended learning for new managers. It comprises four modules – each featuring real-life, relatable Civil Service leadership scenarios – and takes four months to complete. The modules focus on strategy and decision making; team working; performance and change; and communication. |
Practitioner Programme
In a time of constant change, our leaders and managers play a key role in helping the Civil Service to meet the government’s vision for reform and the challenges that lay ahead. The Practitioner programme will equip you with the skills, knowledge and networks you need. Previously, the Experienced Manager Programme was the ideal learning for managers with more than 12 months of management experience. The Management: Practitioner Programme has been developed in line with the new educational standards as part of the focus on training, and is the Leadership College's recommended learning for experienced managers. The programme consists of three modules, each lasting approximately six weeks and a fourth module which includes your continued learning post programme. |
Senior Practitioner Programme
With its focus on developing line management capability within the Civil Service, the Senior Practitioner programme is aimed at senior managers at grades 6 and 7 and deputy directors. It aims to equip managers with the skills they need, not just to manage their teams, but also to deliver excellent citizen outcomes and to make effective use of all available resources. Two recurring themes of inclusion and hybrid ways of working in government are woven into the programme’s design – which also prioritises action learning over management theory. The programme is delivered over the course of five months and features four training modules, each of which contains an all-day facilitated workshop.
