The BCS International Diploma in Solution Development is obtained by passing 4 certification modules (1 foundation and 3 practitioner) plus an oral examination conducted by 2 BCS oral examiners.

During the oral examination, the examiners assess candidates on their solution development and interpersonal skills. This assessment approach is at levels 4/5 within Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognitive Domains. BCS does not require any experience prior to taking the oral examination. An oral examination lasts for approximately 50 minutes. Candidate who pass the oral examination are awarded the BCS International Diploma in Solution Development. Successful completion of this course requires access an external online assessment. The online assessment platform may not be accessible from Civil Service department IT due to security restrictions.
