What the role of security departments and security management involves (structure, function, responsibilities) -
Apply knowledge to real‐world scenarios:
Use scenario‐based thinking to apply theory to practice (e.g. how to protect assets, develop policies, react to incidents).
Identify risks and prevention measures, including through analysis of causes and crime prevention techniques. -
Specialised understanding in elective topic(s): Depending on chosen electives, gain deeper knowledge in areas like physical security, strategic security, terrorism awareness, risk & crisis management.

Develop capability in managing a security department:
Understanding departmental management: resource allocation, oversight, supervisory requirements. Understanding information security: maintaining confidentiality, integrity, availability of information. -
Critical thinking and reflection:
Analyse best practice texts / theory critically, question assumptions, compare theory vs. current practice. -
Communication and assessment skills:
Produce written answers to assessment questions with clarity, using scenario context.
Demonstrate understanding through assessments that require both description and explanation. -
Professional development and pathway progression: Use this qualification to access further qualifications (e.g. Level 5 Diploma, Level 7 Advanced Diploma) or to demonstrate professional recognition and eligibility for membership.

The Security Institute Certificate in Security Management is an online, internationally recognised security training course. Designed by security practitioners, the course gives you an introduction to the core principles of security management.
Learners will gain an understanding of policy and best-practice techniques that security professionals should adopt. To give extra insight, you have a choice of elective modules. This gives you flexibility in your learning, helping the course to be relevant to your goals.
From discussing the formation of risk, to analysing potential causes and prevention of crime, this course is a must for those either new to their role, or for experienced security professionals who perhaps haven’t worked at an academic level for some time. This is an online training course made up of six modules, three of which are mandatory and three chosen from elective modules.

•Three elective modules (choose from several):
- Health & Safety
- Retail Security
- Strategic Security
- Physical Security
- Terrorism Awareness & Management
- Risk, Crisis & Disaster Management
•The qualification is a BTEC Level 3 Advanced Certificate.
•It is designed for those new to security management roles, or experienced practitioners who want a formal recognised qualification at this level.
•Duration is about 6 months, with approximately 180 learning hours.
•Assessment is by written responses (short‐answer style, often scenario‐based) with tutor feedback.
Successful completion of this course requires access an external online assessment. The online assessment platform may not be accessible from Civil Service department IT due to security restrictions.
