Overview
Off the shelf (OTS)
Behavioural Insights: Methods and Tools covers a core set of skills and practical expertise for civil servants and practitioners involved in policy design, programme delivery, communications, and operational decision-making. The course supports participants to develop the capabilities needed to apply behavioural science effectively in their day-to-day work and to contribute to better policy and programme outcomes.
Participants will gain a clear understanding of how human behaviour and decision making work in practice, and how behavioural insights can be used to diagnose challenges, design solutions, and improve implementation. The course introduces BIT’s TESTS methodology (Target, Explore, Solution, Trial, Scale), refined over more than a decade of applying behavioural science to real-world problems across government and public services.
Throughout the course, participants work on a real challenge relevant to their organisation, gaining hands-on experience of running a behavioural insights project from start to finish. Examples and case studies can be tailored to current organisational priorities. For example, where teams are working on AI adoption, the course can focus on behavioural challenges such as overcoming resistance to new technology, supporting behaviour change among staff, and designing implementation approaches that are more likely to stick.
By the end of the course, participants leave with practical tools, solution ideas developed during the training, and a clear framework for evaluation, enabling them to apply behavioural insights confidently in their roles.
Participants are provided with a workbook, copy of the slides, and link to the online Barrier Identification and EAST cards, to be used for barrier diagnostics and solutions design, respectively
