Overview

Off the shelf (OTS)

This course is designed for investigators and other operational staff who may be required to plan, conduct or support searches under Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) powers. The course is suitable for personnel who require a practical understanding of the lawful use of search powers and will be contextualised to reflect the specific powers, policies and operational requirements of the commissioning organisation. No prior specialist search experience is required.

The course provides learners with the legal and practical skills required to plan and conduct lawful, effective searches and manage evidence recovered during search activity. Learners will consider the relevant PACE provisions alongside organisation-specific powers and apply these within realistic operational scenarios. Particular emphasis is placed on translating legal requirements into effective search practice, from initial planning and briefing through to the recovery, recording and management of evidential exhibits.

Key topic areas include:
• Application of relevant PACE legislation to the identification and recovery of evidential exhibits
• Organisation-specific search powers and their lawful application
• Search planning, methodologies and best practice
• Preparation and delivery of operational briefings
• Risk identification and management during search activity
• Recording search activity and decisions
• Identification, recovery and management of evidential exhibits
• Continuity and integrity of evidence throughout an investigation

The course is delivered over two days and combines tutor-led input, discussion and practical application. On day two, learners take part in practical search scenarios designed to provide an opportunity to apply the legislation, search methodology and operational considerations covered during the course.

There is no examination. Learners' application of the course content is assessed through the practical search scenarios on day two, with a focus on conducting searches lawfully, applying best practice and appropriately managing evidential material.
