Overview

Off the shelf (OTS)

This one-day course provides a practical introduction to the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) and its application in law enforcement, local authority, and regulatory environments. It is designed for officers, investigators, and managers who are involved in or oversee covert tactics such as surveillance, use of CHIS (Covert Human Intelligence Sources), and the acquisition of communications data.

Delegates will gain a clear understanding of when RIPA applies, what authorisations are required, and how to ensure compliance with the law, oversight bodies, and internal policies. The course also explores the changes introduced by the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 and the expectations of the Investigatory Powers Commissioner’s Office (IPCO).

Delivered through real-life examples and practical discussion, the course helps reduce risk by promoting lawful, necessary, and proportionate use of covert techniques.
