Overview

Off the shelf (OTS)

This highly interactive 11/2 day course aims to enhance participants’ ability to think politically and, by using different tools of analysis, to address effectively issues of current domestic and/or international importance. The course will offer introductions to a selection of issues, followed by practical exercises which enable participants to learn by doing, applying theory to practice.

METHODOLOGY

1.This course addresses factors that determine why some policies succeed while others fail. It introduces a ‘strategic policy framework’ that emphasises the importance of clear political vision, measurable evaluation criteria and success indicators.

2.The course introduces also a range of tools of analysis that can be helpful to understanding and managing the dynamics of policy.

3.Drawing on current issues of direct relevance to participants, the course offers practical exercises that replicate the key stages of policy development, enabling participants to rehearse in real time the policy process in their respective areas of responsibility.

[The course content can be adjusted to focus on domestic and/or international policy.]

4.Participants will explore how to identify and influence key stakeholders, while remaining accountable to the wider public.

5.Participants will be mentored throughout the course by experienced senior officials providing advice and personal feedback.
