Overview
Off the shelf (OTS)
This 90 minute in-person course is aimed at new experienced hires to the civil service, or existing civil servants new to working with ministers. It will equip you with the context and knowledge you need to work effectively with ministers as a civil servant. You will explore the ministerial role, and the challenges and demands that ministers face; discuss what ministers value in their interactions with the civil service; and spend time identifying specific actions you can take to work with ministers more effectively. By the end of the course, you will be able to:
1) Describe the ministerial role and the challenges and demands that ministers face.
2) Explain what knowledge, skills and relationships civil servants need to work effectively with ministers and why.
3) Identify actions you can take to work more effectively with ministers The course is based on extensive research and interviews with civil servants and ministers, reflecting on their experiences of working together.
